About WGU

WGU emerged from the idea that the internet offered untapped potential to deliver higher education in a way that met the changing needs of students. A group of state governors were determined to find a flexible, scalable solution to deliver high-quality college education to underserved populations in their states. At a meeting of the Western Governors Association in 1997, a nonprofit university was proposed as a way that states could collaborate to fund and share a new university to make education accessible to students across the country.

WGU offers undergraduate degrees, master’s degrees, and certificates in the areas of business, education, technology, and health and nursing.

As of 2026, WGU’s enrollment is nearly 195,000, reaching students in all 50 states as well as U.S. military bases. WGU’s focus on career-readiness has resulted in high levels of student satisfaction and career success. A 2025 alumni survey conducted by Gallup indicated that WGU graduates highly value their education, strongly agreeing that their WGU education was worth the cost of tuition (69% of WGU students vs. national average of 38%).
