Technology and programming skills are in high demand in the workforce—and not just for tech companies! The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that careers directly related to web development are expected to grow 23% over the next decade, and software development positions are expected to grow 25%. But of even greater note is that more and more jobs now require programming and technology skills—you may find yourself using web development tools as a graphic designer or data visualization as an environmental scientist. Proficiency in data analysis, machine learning, and IT skills, for example, frequently top surveys of desirable job skills for new hires in a range of different fields.

Further, developments in technology lead to rapid changes in industries and jobs. This requires employees to continually learn and update their skills and abilities. Educational opportunities are adapting as well in order to meet the needs of a constantly shifting workforce.

The Top Benefits of Learning Technology Skills

Some of the major benefits of gaining technology skills at any point in one’s career or education include the following:

  1. Gaining in-demand job skills makes you a more attractive candidate, and employers in just about every field are searching for candidates with data science skills.
  2. Showcasing even a basic grasp of technology and programming skills provides greater flexibility in career options.
  3. Displaying proficiency in high-value skills can land you a larger salary and greater job security.
  4. Learning a new skill builds confidence and lays the groundwork for learning future skills, applications, and programming languages.
  5. Who knows—it may help you discover a hidden passion or talent!

Modular Learning

Proficiency in skills related to computer programming, analytics, data visualization software, and web development tools can be a serious résumé booster for soon-to-be college graduates. But not all students have space in their schedule to take a programming course, and not all degree programs offer full instruction in web development. More and more universities and individual learners are turning to modular instruction as a solution for gaining high-value technology skills either in tandem with a degree program or on their own. MyEducator’s technology application modules, for example, can be used as part of a semester-long course, as a skills-based course offered by a university separate from a traditional degree program, or as a standalone module for business professionals who want to level up their abilities.

Modular learning provides a glimpse into the future of education: skills and credentials are packaged into bite-sized pieces that can be completed quickly. The end result of completing a module is evidence of proficiency in a given skill. Some universities and learning organizations, such as edX, offer “stackable” modules that can be combined to create a customized degree program. Modules help increase access to quality education at a lower cost in terms of both money and time

Take the first step toward learning a new skill or teaching others a new skill today. Research the most in-demand technology applications for your desired industry. Take a new course or attend a lecture. And, check out MyEducator’s modular resources for learning PythonVBAweb development, and Tableau to boost your students’ technology skills, earning potential, and versatility in the job market—they won’t regret making this investment in their education today!
